TROUBLESHOOTING POOL CLEANERS
If your suction side pool cleaner quits working or fails to
cover the whole pool, you can troubleshoot it yourself.
These pool cleaners work off the pool's water flow when
the pump is operating.
They are designed to cover the whole pool in a random
pattern all the time the pool circulation system is on.
Some of the cleaners, like the Kreepy Krauly and the
Zodiac Barracuda, have a large flat "foot" on the bottom
and are designed to run backward around the pool.
Others, like the Polaris and the Poolvergneugen, have
geared wheels that propel them forward.
Low Flow Problems
If your cleaner is not running at all, first check the cleaner
hose to be sure it is firmly attached to the suction line in
the skimmer or to the dedicated cleaner line, if your pool
is equipped with one. Make sure the pump is running and
water is circulating properly. If you have high filter
pressure and low flow, clean the filter.
If you have low filter pressure and low flow, check the
pump's hair and lint pot basket for debris blocking the
flow. Next, disconnect the cleaner hose and pull the unit
out of the water. Check the intake hole in the bottom of
the cleaner for rocks, large leaves or other debris. If the
cleaner intake hole is blocked, it can collapse the cleaner
hose. While you're checking the cleaner hose, take the
sections apart and look into them to check for any
obstructions in the hose.
Checking Cleaner Parts
all suction side cleaners run on water driven "motors."
Those with a flat "foot" have a "duck billed" valve or a
pulsar that opens and closes rapidly to provide
locomotion. Check to see this part is not worn out or
broken. On wheeled models, check for broken gears or
broken gear teeth in the gear box. Also, check the wheels
to make sure they turn properly and are not too worn to
provide traction.
Check the floats and weights on the cleaner hose.
The floats keep the hose up out of the way so the cleaner
doesn't get stalled against its own hose. The hose weights
are adjustable (slide them up and down the hose) to keep
the cleaner upright and flat on the pool bottom.
Checking Hose Length and Air Leaks
if the cleaner doesn't cover the whole pool check the hose
length. The hose should be long enough to reach from the
skimmer or dedicated line to the farthest point in the pool
with at least 3 feet to spare. Add more hose lengths if it
won't reach. Check the hose for air leaks if the sections
are not fitted together tightly or the hose is worn or
punctured, the pump may lose its prime or surge, causing
the cleaner to be sluggish or to stop moving. Other
symptoms of this problem are air bubbles coming out the
pool return lines and a sucking sound from the hose at the
top of the water.
